Wounds of the Mouth
These are injuries caused by the bit. The bars of the mouth and the corners of the lips may be bruised or lacerated.
If the bars be badly injured it is quite likely that the nerves may remain permanently affected after the wound has healed, and this will give the horse a hard mouth.
If only one bar has been injured it will cause a one-sided mouth.
Bruises and wounds of this type are a frequent cause of a horse being shy about the head and not going kindly
Treatment:- Keep the bit out of the horse's mouth and bathe with a very dilute disinfectant—e.g., salt and water, or a bucket of water with ˝ teaspoonful of potassium permanganate added to it.
